What Operating System (OS) is Running on your Computer

PC – (Windows)

  1. On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click the Start button, and then click ‘Run‘. On Windows Vista and Windows 7 PC’s there is no ‘Run’ option – instead there is a search box – see below:
  2. In the Run dialog box, or in the search box on Windows Vista, type: winver
  3. Click OK, or in Windows Vista hit Return. You should see something like the following image, indicating what version of Windows is running and what service packs if any:
  4. Please take note of the Operating System and also any service packs e.g. Service Pack 2

Apple Mac – (Mac OS)

  1. Click on the ‘monitor’ icon in the top right hand corner of the screen and choose Finder
  2. Click on the Apple Menu icon in the top left corner of the screen.
  3. Select About this Computer (or About this Macintosh)
  4. In the About dialog box your operating system is given as ‘System Software’
